Decarbonisation and energy

Leading innovation for net zero
Decarbonisation is critical to James Cropper. We have developed a comprehensive roadmap to rethink energy consumption, reduce primary energy use and shift to renewable energy sources. By 2025, we intend to cut natural gas use by 25% and are proactively working towards net zero across our supply chain by 2050.

Revolutionising Energy Usage

Pioneering engineering innovation awarded £4.2 million

As a business in an energy intensive industry, the majority of James Cropper’s energy and emissions result from heat demand. Decarbonising this heat will be the focus of the IETF funded deployment project and will deliver a step-change reduction in primary energy usage. This will require an overhaul of how energy is consumed and managed on site. The project is expected to result in a 24.3% reduction of annual gas consumption by over 47,000 MWh and in over 8,600 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions. The success of the programme will put James Cropper on track to deliver significant decarbonisation advances and act as a crucial reference case for other large heat consumers to follow. James Cropper will actively seek to inspire change within and beyond the paper industry, helping others on their decarbonisation journeys.

Powered by Renewables

All electricity purchased for our Burneside manufacturing site is 100% renewable

Our commitment to net zero has driven a programme to understand and rethink how we consume and manage energy. A crucial element of this is a significant reduction in our primary energy usage and a move to renewable energy sources. We currently have one of the UK's largest roof mounted PV systems and we have attained planning permission to build a new Low Carbon Energy Centre, which will enable us to electrify our papermaking processes over the coming years

Our sustainable commitment

James Cropper cares strongly about people, sustainable manufacturing and responsible business practices. This drives our approach to decision making across the whole planning horizon.

Dedicated to net zero

Commited to significant reduction in net emissions by 2030
James Cropper material solutions are solving some of the worlds social and environmental challenges, but we acknowledge that we must also change our own manufacturing practices to safeguard our future. Together, we have set ambitious net zero goals, with decarbonisation objectives to hit by 2030 and to be 100% net zero emissions by 2050.
